What is Family?

A long time ago I heard the expression, “treat your family like friends and your friends like family.” That really stuck with me and I began to wonder if my friends saw how I treat family what would they think? If my family saw how I treat my friends what would they think? Sometimes we wear different faces for the people we know. I remember how at times I lost my temper with my family, but I would not have dared to do that with friends. Why? Because I was afraid I would not have the friends much longer. A few times I did and it took a long time to heal the wounds. And I figured my family would forgive me because…well they are family.
Jesus said something very different. In Mark 3:32, Jesus was sitting inside teaching His disciples when someone came and told Him your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.
He replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Then He looked at those seated in a circle around Him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” It did not mean He did not love His earthly family, but when we are united by God’s love..that also is family. There are family members that banish any members who become Christian. They may even kill them. For those precious believers the family they now become a part of are their brothers and sisters in Christ.
If you do not want to be around family could it be because there is hurt somewhere and forgiveness is nowhere to be seen? In the attached picture you can see four of our precious grandchildren: Hayden, Owen, Tiffany and Faith. Because they live so far away when we are together we want to make every moment count. And if there is the slightest disagreement we want to make it right. What would happen if we did that with our family close by or people who are like family to us. So many hurts would be healed and so much joy would flow. Keep in mind that Jesus told us, if we will not forgive others He will not forgive us. Christmas is a wonderful season for making memories. Let’s make new ones by repairing some of the old hurts with love with family members or people who are like family to us. God bless you and have a blessed Christmas season. The best present in the world is a package given with bows of love and a treasure inside that offers the hand of forgiveness. Love you, kathy
